This isn’t the first time I’ve gone to the Oregon Zoo, and it’s not the first zoo I’ve ever gone to, either.
Do you know what I saw when I went to the Oregon Zoo? Yep…Lions and Tigers and BEARS, oh my!
But I saw so very much more, too!
A Little Bit of Zoo History
The Oregon Zoo began in 1888. It started with a pharmacist named Richard B. Knight. He donated a brown bear and a grizzly bear to the City of Portland. Over time, more animals were added.
This zoo is the oldest North American zoo west of the Mississippi River. There, now you have another new trivia answer.
It moved to its current location on July 3rd, 1959. The name of the zoo changed 3 times over the span of its existence. First, it was the Portland Zoo. Next was the Washington Park Zoo (the zoo is in Washington Park). Now it is known as the Oregon Zoo.
In 2018, the zoo saw more than 1.7 million visitors. There are over 1800 animals to see. There are more than 230 species, 9 of which are threatened and 19 of which are endangered.
First Things First
First, I’ll tell you the best way to get tickets. I’ll give you pointers on how to get to the zoo.
I want you to think of what you might need for your own personal comfort while you are at the zoo.
My son and I walked for more than 3 hours the day we went. In addition to comfortable clothing, I made sure to wear my walking shoes, and my son added a hat plus a backpack to his outfit today.
Layering is also a good idea because we arrived at 10:00 AM, and I was thinking I wish I had brought a lightweight jacket. By 1:00 PM, it was 83 degrees, and I was glad I wasn’t wearing a jacket.
I’m going to tell you how to get into and find your way around the zoo.
The best part, though, is when I show you (and tell you about) some of the animals you will see in the zoo.
Now, Lets Get Started
Purchase Your Reserve Tickets Ahead of Time Online
If you want to go to the zoo, or any attraction, nowadays you should check online to see how tickets should be purchased. I have noticed that more and more, you will be told to purchase tickets to attractions online, ahead of time. That was the case with the Oregon Zoo.
*I read you could just go to the gates and try to buy tickets, but there was no guarantee that you would get in immediately or at all without reserve tickets.
I got my credit card ready because I knew there would be a cost (this attraction is not free). I searched for the Oregon Zoo on my phone (or, if you are on your home computer, go to oregonzoo.org). Once at the Oregon Zoo website, at the top of the page, you will see “Buy Tickets”. Click that.
*Next, you will see “Log in” or “Sign up now”. You don’t have to do either if you just want to buy tickets for a one-time visit.
Under “Daily Admission”, I clicked “Select”. Once you have done that, the rest is easy. You choose the date you want to go, the time you want to arrive, and how many tickets you want (basically, fill in all the blanks as they ask). It’s really easy.
You will get a confirmation message sent to your email address saying “Done”. It will have your order number just above a QR code. You will need to show this confirmation along with your photo ID to the person at the entrance to the zoo.
There is no cash taken anywhere in the zoo, so bring a credit card, a debit card, or a form of touchless mobile payments if you want to buy anything. There are lots of places in the zoo where you can buy food, but my son and I decided to bring drinks and snacks in a backpack.
Note: No alcohol may be brought in, and no glass containers of any kind. Plastic and metal containers are ok.
Parking, Or Will You Take Some Form of Transit?
The zoo is at 4001 SW Canyon Rd, Portland, OR 97221. We chose to drive and park, but you can travel to the zoo in many different ways. Here is a link for you to see various travel options (like riding the MAX light rail or traveling on a free shuttle bus from various locations).
Since we drove, we needed to pay for parking. They charge either an hourly rate or a flat rate for the entire day (your choice). I decided on the flat rate, which at the time of this posting was just under $10.00.
The machine (seen here) will require you to put in your license plate number. If you haven’t gotten it committed to memory, write it down or take a picture of it with your phone before you go to the parking machine. Using this machine was real easy. Since we arrived at 10:00 AM and planed to stay for several hours, I used my credit card to purchase parking for the day. They will text you a parking confirmation if you choose that option (which I did).
After this, note where you parked as the parking lot is pretty big and fills up.
Finally, We Are Ready To Go In
We went through this entrance and walked down the path to the right. We saw zoo workers at stands where they looked at my confirmation and my ID. In my case, my confirmation was in my name only, but I had purchased 2 tickets (one for myself and one for my son).
Animals Everywhere
Once in, we continued to walk down and around to the left, where we saw some beautiful Rocky Mountain goats. These goats are native to North America.
There is a beautiful statue of these types of goats just past their enclosure.
The zoo has lots of signs to help you find your way around and to figure out exactly where in the zoo you are.
You will see posts with directional signs.
There are also maps that show you all of the areas and where you are currently.
Artwork and Natural Scenery
This zoo is beautiful. Along your path, you will see artwork, sculptures, waterfalls, flowers, plants, and trees.
The walking paths here are lovely, and this rockface waterfall had sculptured fish jumping upstream.
Feathered, Furry, and Finned Friends
There are lots of feathered, furry, and finned friends in the zoo. On this path, we saw a bald eagle.
When we saw the bald eagle, a squirrel decided it was a good time to collect goodies from the ground. It ran all around collecting stuff. You can see it here in this picture on the log at the base of the waterfall. It was about 12 feet to the right of the bald eagle. The eagle had its eye on the squirrel, watching its every move carefully, but it didn’t try to go after it. Perhaps they are old friends.
We saw sturgeon too.

At the time of this writing, there is no charge for parking or admission at the fish hatchery. It is about 43 minutes East of the zoo. It’s just off of Interstate 84 (easy to find in my opinion).
California Condors at the Zoo
Did you know that the California condor is a critically endangered species? In 1989, there were only 22 California condors left. As of 2025, there were 566, of which 369 had been released into the wild.
This zoo has California condors. Quite a few of them.
They were flying from post to post, taking turns on top like in king of the mountain.
A Slender-snouted Crocodile and Others
They have a slender-snouted crocodile. I wouldn’t like being that little white fish in the tank with the crocodile.
What a beauty he (or she) is.
There are so many animals to see. You can see otters, bats, lizards, turtles, flamingos, a large collection of ducks, North American beavers, and more. I won’t show all of the animals to you, because you need to go see them for yourself.
Now, Here’s Something You’ll Really Like
Tigers
They have at least 1 Amur tiger (the biggest cat in the world).
An Amur tiger can grow up to 450 pounds and can grow to be 10 feet long. The one seen below was lying down behind a rock. No one around us knew it was there until it stood up. It had just vanished in the shadows of the surrounding trees.
I’m not sure if both are the same type of tiger, but I’m guessing they are because they were in the same enclosure.
Giraffes and Others
This giraffe has such a sweet-looking face.
A giraffe at birth is 6 feet tall. As an adult, they can get to a height of 18 feet. Did you know there are 4 different species of giraffe? At the end of this post, there is a link that will tell you all about them.
Here at the zoo, one of the giraffes likes to play tetherball. I have video of it playing, and I was going to upload the video, but really, you have to go see this for yourself…it’s adorable to watch.
So many animals here at the zoo. They have monkeys, lions, elephants, polar bears, and more. You’ve just got to go to see them all.
Orangutans
Orangutans are the largest tree-living mammals on our planet. They weave a new sleeping nest every night out of leaves and branches. It only takes them about 10 minutes to do so.

Bongos
The zoo has 2 male eastern mountain bongos. Here you can see both sides of a bongo.
What’s a bongo?
A bongo is an African antelope subspecies. They are close cousins to cows, goats, and sheep. The eastern mountain bongo is critically endangered, with fewer than 100 left in the wild.
Their decline is caused by heavy loss of habitat due to illegal logging, poaching for horns and meat, and fatal diseases introduced by contact with domestic livestock.
Rock Fish
The fish you see here is a Canary rockfish.
They had lots of magnificent fish in one of the tanks, 8 of which were rockfish. Here is a list of the maximum age that each of the rockfish at the zoo might achieve.

- Blue Rockfish – 24 years
- Brown Rockfish – 34 years
- Canary Rockfish – 75 years
- China Rockfish – 79 years
- Copper Rockfish – 50 years
- Quillback Rockfish – 95 years
- Tiger Rockfish – 166 years
- Vermilion Rockfish – 60 years
The fish seen below is a Tiger rockfish. He positioned himself vertically, with his head in the down position, and just hung out there. He must know something that we don’t, like maybe head down is the way to longevity (remember, this fish can live to be 166 years old, outliving all of us).
More trivia answers: The oldest scientifically verified rockfish was a Rougheye rockfish. It was verified to be 205 years old.
At Least 1 Seal
They had at least 1 seal (maybe more than 1 seal, because this one kept leaving, then coming back, so it may have been some other seal).

Humboldt Penguins
They have a bunch of Humboldt penguins from Peru (a bunch is not the technical name of a group of penguins).
Do you know what a group of penguins is called? They are called a colony, a rookery, or a waddle. I think these would be called a waddle (mostly because I like that name).
And now, you have more answers for that trivia game you like to play.
Well, this is where my day at the zoo ended. I hope you have enjoyed the time you have spent with me today. I hope you get to go to the Oregon Zoo and see for yourself all of the wonderful animals that are waiting there for you.
